"...in which seven upstate regions would compete for three $500 million shares of the $1.5 billion pot. The money comes out of a $5 billion legal settlement the state garnered from financial institutions.
The competition will unfold alongside the existing $700 million Regional Economic Development Competition, which is in its fourth year and involves the entire state.
Lawrence Gilroy, co-chair of the Mohawk Valley Region’s group, called Wednesday “a great day for the region.” He said even though the competition wasn’t definite until Wednesday, officials had been getting organized for it.
“We think we start from a position of strength,” he said."

"A $1.5 billion Upstate New York Economic Revitalization Competition - This competition will replicate the successful Buffalo Billion initiative to help further Upstate New York’s economic recovery. Seven regions are eligible to compete for one of three $500 million upstate revitalization funds: Mid-Hudson, Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Central New York, North Country, Southern Tier and Finger Lakes. Projects exhibiting region-wide impact will be made a priority and should focus on strengthening critical infrastructure, revitalizing communities, bolstering workforce development, growing tourism, and improving quality of life."
