Our Thoughts on their facts...

Just their Facts

TOPIC FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 2019:

Will the new regional medical center be big enough?

Yes. Here are the key facts about the size and scope of the new MVHS regional medical center. o The new medical center will be 672,000 square feet and nine stories high. Putting this in perspective with our buildings today, the MVHS St. Luke’s Campus is 461,000 square feet, which includes the professional office building. o There will be 373 beds in the regional medical center.

This reflects the number of beds we are actually staffing today. There has always been confusion between the number of licensed beds we have between our two hospitals (571) and the number of beds that are staffed, which is about 353 with an average daily census of 324 patients.

Our team did a number of projections about the future use of inpatient hospital services and our population trends to arrive at the number of beds necessary for today and into the future.

The new medical center building will have “expandable space.” This means that there are areas, such as where the offices will be located, that can be altered to accommodate an expansion of services, if needed.

o The new medical center’s Emergency Department (ED) is designed to accommodate 90,000 patient visits each year. There are currently about 80,000 patients visits, combined, at the two MVHS hospitals.

The new ED will have 85 treatment areas, including rooms for Behavioral Health and Observation patients. The design makes it easy to “flex” for daily changes in volume. There will be no hallway beds

Today, there are 94 ED treatment rooms combined at the MVHS hospitals. The St. Elizabeth Campus has 46 ED treatment rooms, including two trauma rooms, and the St. Luke’s Campus has 48 (this includes hallway beds). The design for the new ED is far more efficient for treating patients than the configuration of the existing EDs so no additional space is needed.

Ambulances will have their own entrance and parking area to eliminate congestion at the front doors of the ED. o Parking will be plentiful between a 1,550-space parking garage and a number of surface area parking lots.

Employees will not be required to pay for parking.
