TOPIC FOR TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 2019:

How will the regional medical center contribute to the revitalization of Downtown Utica?

Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is one of the largest private sector employers in the county.

• Last year, MVHS generated $863 million in economic activity in the region, according to an analysis conducted by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).

• More than 7,000 jobs are generated by MVHS, which reflects both the number of health system jobs as well as those jobs generated as a result of MVHS employees purchasing goods and services locally.

• $286 million in payroll is expended each year to compensate MVHS employees.

• $113 million in tax dollars are generated by MVHS spending and payroll. In addition to the current economic role we play, the new regional medical center will bring numerous economic benefits to the city and the region. • MVHS has committed to using local labor, materials, equipment vendors and businesses through the project whenever possible. • For the Mohawk Valley region, there will be a more than $155 million impact and the building project will require nearly two million man hours of construction, with a peak employment of nearly 500 construction workers.*

• The project is estimated to generate between $15 - $17 million in state and local sales tax over the 36-month construction phase of which $675,000 to $765,000 in sales tax dollars will go the City of Utica and Oneida County. **

• Estimates show that the City of Utica may realize $237,000 in revenues annually along with other economic benefits after offsetting the loss of current property taxes and the City’s share of annual debt service on the new parking garage. ***

*Estimate provided by Turner Construction, the project construction manager for the new MVHS Regional Medical Center.

**Based on estimate retail purchases by construction workers (e.g., hotels/lodging, gasoline, meals and other discretionary purchases). Does not include the State share of sales tax revenues during construction which could add $637,500 to $725,000 in sales tax dollars from construction worker spending.

***Estimate provide by Mohawk Valley EDGE.
